Olive Wood Carving
- Production of carved olive wood crafts
- Receiving the funding to purchase our first machine, we acquired a saw for shaping the olive wood into different designs. Presently we have expanded our facilities to include a sander, drill, and a small machine for detail work.
Recycling paper
- This program employs the energy of the students in a step by step process of collecting old paper and transforming it into beautiful new paper for sale with olive wood crafts and weavings. The products made from this recycled paper are sold for holiday and occasion cards such as wedding invitations, thank you cards, congratulation notes, sympathy cards, etc.
Production of fuel blocks
- Blending sawdust from various carpentry and olive wood shops, used paper, and water, the students create formed blocks of fuel. These blocks cost very little to produce, eliminate waste by recycling and reusing old materials, and provide an environmentally conscious alternative to wood or gas for heating in the winter. This creative and resourceful project has now replaced gas heating for the Center and saves approximately 1000 USD per year.
Loom Weaving
- The clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities create unique art. The clients weave rag-style rugs, placemats, table runners and other specialty items.
- Loom Weaving uses weaving as a creative tool to enhance a range of development for adults with intellectual, emotional and physical disabilities.
Greenhouse program
- Growing various vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers, work in the greenhouse provides exercise and the development of physical abilities as students till the soil and remove weeds. Additionally the students gain experience in gardening and a fundamental knowledge of agriculture.
Drama program
- Transporting the students to distant places and foreign lands, the drama program is a beloved activity. The students’ social skills are strengthened as they speak in front of an audience and memory is enhanced as students rehearse and recite their lines. Various other cognitive skills are further developed through the conceptual exercise of acting out a storyline, creating an imaginative setting, and envisioning themselves in a new environment.
